It’s again time to climb outdoor, since the weather gets much cooler but not yet cold. If you live in Seoul but don’t have time to go to the mountain for climbing, try to visit one of some artificial rock walls in Seoul, for example in Eungbongsan Rock Park.
Closest subway station: Eungbong, Exit 1, then about 20 min walk uphill.
If you don’t want to walk far, you can reach the park at best by bus. The closest bus stop is “Eungbongdong Hyeondae Apartment”.
Seoul is surrounded by many mountains, so that you can see them from almost everywhere in the city. In beautiful weather, you don’t have to go far away to have great mountain experiences: you can go for a hike e.g. on the Seoul city wall or go rock climbing in Insubong. A lot of multi-pitch routes from 5.6 to 5.12a, as well as boulder tours are there for you to try out.
Today I’ve visited the B.Bloc Urban Climbing Gym in Gangnam with a new friend from California.
One of the reasons why I came here was Chon Jongwon – currently the 3rd best rock climber on IFSC ranking. I’ve read recently that he was supposed to be the owner or at least part owner of this gym. I wanted to check this facility out, and maybe, I could see him climbing live again. Last year, I watched the Adidas cup live in Stuttgart and was really amazed by his climbing skill. He won the 2nd place there. And other reasons were, of course, to check out new boulder challenges or styles and meet new people.
After long time waiting, yesterday, the 3rd Spyder Hangang Climbing Championship 2018 was finally held in Banpo Hangang Park. Here you could watch professional as well as amateur rock climber competing and enjoying the 14-meter high wall, built directly on the water of the Han-river. All must climb without rope. And in case anyone cannot make the move, he or she would fall into the water.
The amateur rock climbers started already in the morning. Only at around 7:30 pm, the final round with pros cominng from Korea, Japan, Germany, USA, Canada, etc. began.
The registration for this competition was in May. Since my climbing skill was just so so… I decided only to watch :-). My friends and I was at the park at around 6:30 pm to watch the pro-final. Truelly impressive!
After trying out rock climbing at The Climb Hongdae twice I’m really happy. It will be my regular training spot from now on. But as I already mentioned, I also wanted to check other locations in Seoul, and today I’ve made it to visit another boulder gym – The Core Climbing (TCC).
