There are not so many options to survive the winter in Seoul for rock climbers. I mean, while boulder gyms seem to be easy to find, in door rock climbing walls can rarely be found in the city. Unfortunately, K2 gym and the DYNO wall were closed forever ?.
However, if you don’t mind to go to Incheon, I have another good option for you: the Discovery Climbing Square (DCS ICN).
How to find the gym?
Address: Discovery Climbing Square ICN, 70 Wanjeong-ro Seo-gu Incheon
Naver Map: Link
Closest subway station: Majeon Station (Incheon Line2), Exit 1
Operation hours: Mon.-Thu. 10:00~23:00; Fri.: 17:00~23:00; Sat.: 10:00~22:00; Sun. and public holidays: 10:00~19:00
Entrance fee: Day-pass: 20.000₩; monthly pass: 120.000₩; Belay test (once): 2.000₩
Home page: Discovery Climbing square ICN (only in Korean)
The entrance door is about 5 steps away from the subway exit 1. “If you walk more than 10 steps, you’re in the wrong direction.” – wise hint from Danny ?.
Simply follow the Home Plus express sign until you get into the elevator, then go to the 5th floor. Then you’re there.
How is the facility?
I have to say, the facility is really amazing. I wish it could be somewhere in the city. It’s hard for me to describe how huge it is, but just check out their VR here. You’ll be impressed for sure!
This climbing square’s facility is similar to those I know from Germany. You can not only check in at the front desk, but also rent all the gears you need, such as shoes, harness, belaying devices, rope and chalk bag.
Or buy everything you need in their gear shop. There are a lot of useful stuff with good deals. Definitely worthy to pay a visit!
Despite the large area, all rooms are quite tidy and well organized. Kids can also have fun in their own playing room.
Thanks to the well heating and cooling system, the whole gym has nice temperature for climbing even during cold winter and hot summer.
How is the bouldering area?
You should plan a lot of time when you visit DCS, because there are so many things for you to try out. Only talking about boudering, there are 5 huge different rooms.
The biggest bouldering area is around 150m2 large and named “Bouldering Plaza”. You can try out all the problems set along the 4.5m hight walls around this plaza, or watch people while resting in the middle of it.
A speed climbing training wall also stand in this area for those who wants to try out speed climbing
How are the climbing walls?
No matter which grade you climb, you will have fun at DCS. There are in total three main climbing halls: Easy-Climb, Top-Rope and Lead.
Located in the higher floor of the gym, this area mainly targets beginners and features many easy top-rope routes. The wall here is not as high as in other halls, only 10m.
Top rope climbing hall
More than 20 top rope routes that are 15m high, can be found in the top rope area. The wall is rather straight, with less overhang but still challenging.
Lead climbing hall
This is the most exciting and busy area of DCS. Here you can lead all routs from 5.8 and 5.13b, solve different problems with and without overhang or roof. By the way, in order to climb with your friend in this area, both of you need to pass the belay test first. The test takes about 10 minutes and cost 2.000₩.
If you’re into speed climbing, you can use the double speed wall with auto-belay system and stop watch.
Don’t have a belayer? No problem…
It’s an usuall problem that all rock climbers know: you want to go climbing but don’t have someone who can belay you. DCS can help you to climb, even if you come alone. How does it work? There are two solutions:
1. Auto-belay devices for top-roping
The first option is to climb with the auto belay devices. If you wish to use it, the DCS staff will be happy give you a short introduction, how to use it. Then you can climb all routes equiped with this device to climb.
The 2nd option is to have a so called Free-Belay-Sticker. You’ll get this sticker when you let the frontdesk staff know, that you’re coming alone, without a belayer. If other rock climbers see this sticker, they will offer you to join them.
If you don’t wish to have a belayer anymore, just simply remove the sticker.
Other useful information
If you plan to come to the Discovery Climbing square often, don’t forget to ask the frontdesk for membership. You will have to pay a certain amount for it, but get some discount for your visits.
There are discount for family with kids as well.
